Freight Forwarders are ready to deal with the challenge posed by automation

Logistics which was so far considered to be one of the slowest segments in terms of technological innovations is finally waking up to the advantages which technology has to offer.

Technological innovations are proliferating like never before in the logistics world threatening to alter the conventional freight forwarding process. Starting from online load boards, connected containers, online processing and cloud based freight marketplaces, the recent advancement in technology has somewhat jeopardized the future of the freight forwarding industry.

However, there is not much reason to be concerned since the logistics industry is transforming at a lightning speed with shippers, warehouse operators and carriers coming up with new technologies which would irrevocably change the way business was conducted before. Therefore the only option for independent freight forwarders is to adapt to the new changes so as to survive and grow in an increasingly competitive environment. Freight forwarders has nothing to fear from automation and are expected to remain undaunted till technology offers an unparalleled level of client servicing.

Shippers have placed their trust on freight forwarders for decades not just because of their ability to move a shipment from point X to point Y but rather because of the fact that only forwarders can be trusted to do the job exceptionally well. This is precisely why the freight forwarding industry is expected to remain unperturbed by the threats posed by automation.

Glb Taipei delivers an extremely fragile taichi sculpture

Globalia Taipei establishes itself as a first-rate artwork deliverer after successfully transporting a Taichi sculpture

Apollo Logistics has recently transferred a 2.5 meters high Taichi Sculpture from Beijing to Taipei. The 2.5 meter high sculpture was made entirely out of glass fibre making it an extremely fragile item to deliver.

The Taichi Sculpture which was exhibited at the Beijing University during the 2008 Olympiade was sent as a gift to the National Taiwan Normal University in May, this year. In the words of Richard Yeh, Globalia Taipei’s General Manager “Proper positioning of the sculpture was one of the major challenges we faced in this case. Being a highly fragile artwork it demanded totally accurate, safe and efficient handling which our team has accomplished with perfection.”

Here’s to Apollo Logistics for their brilliant feat!

“As long as there is trading, there will be a constant need for freight forwarders”. Interview with Globalia Tema/Accra

Q. Can you tell us a little more of Baj Freight?
A. BAJ is the acronym for Bart, Ato and Joe. The name BAJ is simply a constant reminder of the hard work of our employees under the skillful management of Mr. Joseph K. Biney, Ato Quagrine and Fred Bart Simpson whose collaboration dates back to thirty-two years ago when they met as employees of Relebo Lines Limited.

Q. When did you decide to become a freight forwarder and how did you get into the industry?
A.I think as long as there is trading, there would be a constant need for freight forwarders. Hence, I thought of my profession as a calling to this need.

Q. What distinguishes BAJ FREIGHT from other freight forwarders in your city?
A. What distinguishes us from other forwarders is that BAJ is a pacesetter in the industry. We seek to get involved in a series of industry pilot programmes and developmental corporate social responsibilities such as the BAJ Freight junior Tennis League.

Q. What has been your greatest success so far?
A. BAJ is the first Local Company to be licensed by the Ghana Nuclear Regulatory Authority to safely transport radioactive cargo to and From Ghana and neighbouring countries for key clients such as Newmont, Schlumberger amongst others. Our company has won:
– 2014, 2015 and 2016.- Oil & Gas Logistics company of the year
– 2014.- First Western Regional Business and Financial Service Excellence Awards
– 2015 & 2016.- Best Freight Forwarding Company & Logistics Company of the year
– 2015.- Customs House Agents Awards(for the third highest revenue collected for Ghana Revenue Authority)
– 2017.- Haulage Company of the year

Q. How did you hear about Globalia? What most attracted you to us?
A. Globalia was recommended by some of my partners in the other freight network associations. BAJ rarely had partners in the areas your members were located hence I felt the need to be a part.

Q. What’s the biggest difficulty in dealing with suppliers/factories?
A. The problem had always been price undercutting, high rates, lack of proper industry information and time constraints.

Q. What are the main challenges facing freight forwarders in your country at the moment? How are you dealing with them?
A. Ghana has a high influx of freight forwarders who still practice the old ways of buying and selling freight. Added to this is the frequent price undercutting by other forwarders with less consideration on the cost implication. BAJ has invested in technologies which would allow our clients to track their cargo progress and status. We are currently emphasizing on having a personal interaction with clients to lay more emphasis on quality of service and not accept undercut prices

Q. What would be the most difficult shipment your team has handled to date? How did you handle it?
A.We handled an out of gauge 8.5m exhaust funnel for a thermal plant project where we had to pass under three high tension low hanging poles which connected Ghana, Togo and Cote d’Iovire within 15 minutes. Honestly, I thought this was going to be impossible but we requested the concerned authorities to disconnect the poles one after the other for the funnel to pass and then reconnect the power.

Q. Tell us a funny story about a curious shipment you have handled.
A. A client engaged BAJ for services relating to customs clearance of general goods. Having communicated the ETA of the Vessel to the client, there was an unfortunate incident which delayed the vessel arrival hence the ETA kept changing. After three communication of ETA change, I got to my office, to find our client with a pillow and mattress saying that he will not leave until we confirm that the vessel had arrived. Fortunately for me, that very day, I received an email from the shipping line saying that the vessel had berthed.

Q. How do you see BAJ Freight in 10 years?
A. Within 10 years we aim to be one of the top three logistics company in West Africa, using the most sophisticated technologies and implementing global standards in freight forwarding.

A new distribution center for Globalia Panama

Globalia Panama’s new warehouse in America’s Colon Free Zone is a highly resourceful and cost-effective centre for the distribution of their client’s products

partner with logistics company

Globalia member in Panama, General Cargo SA has come up with a new warehouse facility and distribution centre in the Colon Free Zone- considered to be the number one Duty-Free Trade Zone in America. Their clients will now be able to distribute their items from this duty-free zone at a cost-effective rate all over Central, North and South America and the Caribbean.

Some of the perks of choosing Panama as a distribution centre are the road connectivity to Central America, the locational advantage of the Panama Canal with weekly frequencies to overseas destination and of course it’s close proximity to the main air hub which is just 50 Km away from the warehouse. This has enabled them to offer an efficient service for cross-docking on LCL, turn around FCL´s, transshipments for FCL and LCL cargo, plus an integrated distribution/shipping services.

Mr. Pedro Chaluja, the Director of General Cargo states that “Presently one of our main customers is a leading industrial electrical manufacturer for whom we are administrating and distributing. We are also working with one of the world’s leading manufacturers of lift and escalators for whom we are handling the Metro Linea 2 Panama City Logistics.”

Here’s to General Cargo for their extraordinary accomplishments

Globalia Dubai manages project valued in $3.5 billion

The project consists of the extension of 14km of Dubai Metro and is expected to be completed by January 2020

air freight and logistics services

Cargotrans Global Forwarding, Globalia Dubai, is now working on a red line Dubai metro project, in cooperation with Acciona, Gulermak and Alstom, which is worth a whopping $3.5 billion. The project which is expected to be completed by January 2020 consists of a 14 km extension of the Dubai Metro Red Line which would involve the construction of both subterranean as well as suspended bridges.

The project started last July when Cargotrans Global Forwarding delivered 46 containers from Europe to Jebel Ali, a port town around 35 Km from Dubai. In order to handle this shipment, they had used dry container, flat rack, open top or as break bulk with container dimensions ranging from 40 HC, 20 FR, 40FR, 40 OT or 40 Platform.

Additionally, they employed HL, MAERSK, CGM and CMA carriers depending on the transit time and availability of equipment and offered a lashing and securing service, as they do in most of the cargoes.

“One of our major challenges is the timely delivery of the material, and prevention of any unforeseen delay such as vessel transhipment, booking rolled over and the likes. Last July we had to manage the packing of 55 T of cargoes and had to transport it by air from Italy to Dubai within just 4 days so as to receive the entire cargo within 6 days after the pickup from the supplier” states Alexis Danelian, Cargotrans Global Forwarding manager.

Three cheers for Cargotrans Global for landing up with this high profile project.
