They are about to invest €70 million in the modernization of their cargo zone which will be complete by 2025
Brussels Airport is gearing up to refurbish its cargo handling area so as to meet the rising demand for handling and storage space. Additionally, this airport has adopted a new strategy to come up as one of the prime airport business districts of the continent. By early 2025, they are planning to build three new buildings with parking spaces in their cargo zone called Brucargo Central.
This project which will span over an area of 83,000 square meters will allow the airport authorities to attract new businesses and offer their partners warehousing services and larger, more efficient, and more sustainable offices. Additionally, sustainability is a strategic priority of Brussel Airport’s infrastructure development project. They are working towards the implementation of sustainable aviation fuel and electric ground handling material.
This airport is one of the fastest-growing air cargo hubs and one of the most important hubs for pharmaceutical shipments. In 2021, Brussels Airport recorded a massive growth in cargo volume and the current endeavours aim to improve its position even further. Moreover, to this end, they are also focussing on the digitization of their services. “We want to further strengthen our position as a global cargo hub and develop the cargo area in a sustainable way in order to offer our logistics partners the most efficient infrastructure and operational processes,” says Arnaud Feist, the CEO of Brussels Airport Company.
The largest ocean carriers like Maersk and MSC are reinvesting their profits in the acquisition of fuel-efficient containerships
Several retailers have been waiting for weeks to move their shipments by freight train from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach while many of them are abandoning rail freight and trying to move their cargo via trucks
The sustainable aviation fuel will help to reduce the carbon emission of their air freight operations by more than 90% and thus significantly help IAG to lower their environmental footprint
According to the World Shipping Council, the two years of the pandemic recorded a significantly high number of weather-related mishaps that led to the loss of 3,133 containers compared to just 779 containers in the previous period
They have signed contracts with Hyundai Heavy Industry and Nihon Shipyard for constructing ten very large container vessels to be delivered within 3 yearschain pressures by diversifying their sourcing strategy
Cost reduction is one of the most significant challenges for independent freight forwarders who want to increase their profit margin without compromising on the quality of services. More often than not, small and mid-sized logistics companies tend to lower the headcount so as to cut down on the expenses. Nevertheless, this is the wrong approach. Today’s article will come in handy for independent freight forwarders who are trying to find an effective logistics cost reduction strategy.
DIGITIZE LOGISTICS OPERATIONS: One of the best ways to cut down logistics costs in the long term is to invest in digitization. Regulation, automation, and optimization of manual logistical processes can immensely help with cost-cutting. Digitization of your office work will reduce your reliance on your staff. More importantly, it will add efficiency and accuracy to your shipping process along with cost reduction. Automation will help to lower your logistics cost per shipment and even help you find new customers by reaching a higher level of customer satisfaction.
MAKE USE OF MULTIPLE MODES OF TRANSPORTATION:
Independent freight forwarders need
to be flexible with regard to modes of
transportation. Never rely on a single
transportation mode to move your cargo.
You need to be agile and arrange for the best
mode of hauling the cargo so that it is both
time and cost-effective. Additionally, you also
need to consider intermodal transportation
rather than relying on a single mode. For
instance, moving freight by rail is more costeffective
than road freight. Nevertheless, a
combination of rail freight and trucking could
prove useful for staying within your budget
and making the delivery on time.
RELY ON ANALYTICS TOOLS
The supply chain demand forecasting tools
allow logistics companies to accurately predict
the demand for cargo throughout the supply
chain even during unforeseen circumstances.
Investing in forecasting software will help you
to get a clear and more efficient picture of
your entire operation. Previously companies
used to depend on old orders as the only
guideline for forecasting demand levels in the
coming months. This often led to inaccurate
decisions. These tools will use all your
previous order data, combine them with the
real-time market analysis and come up with
a demand prediction. This forecast of market
demand is much more accurate thus helping
companies to drive greater value.
FOSTER A BETTER RELATIONSHIP WITH
YOUR SUPPLIERS AND CARRIERS
Forging good relationships with your
suppliers and carriers goes a long way in
reducing your overall logistics expenses. You
need to work alongside your suppliers and
convince them to cover some of the direct
logistics expenses. Discuss pertinent topics
with your suppliers and come up with cost
reduction ideas. Keep in mind that your
suppliers are in the best position to offer you
the best suggestion for creating a cost-saving
agenda that is beneficial for both parties.
Lastly, it goes without saying that carriers and
shipping lines tend to offer a better price to
those agents who repeatedly avail of their
services. For this reason, you should try not
to change your carriers often and work on
building a good relationship with them.
ENSURE A LOW TURNOVER RATE
A fool proof way to lower your expenses
and boost your company’s bottom line is to
ensure reduced turnover. Replacing your
company’s assets is way more expensive than
retaining the existing ones. This is one of
the primary reasons why you should invest
in training your employees. As per a study
by Gallup, replacing a worker can cost your
company almost 150% of the yearly salary of
that worker. Training lowers the employee
turnover rate and allows the company to
have a proficient workforce. Moreover, your
employees will know that the organization is
invested in them. This is one important factor
that encourages your employees not to leave
your organization.
IDENTIFY YOUR FIXED AND VARIABLE EXPENSES
Logistics companies need to have a proper
understanding of fixed and variable expenses.
Fixed expenses are those that don’t change
regardless of the volume. For example, the
expenses related to the management, IT, or
electricity are usually fixed unless it involves a
variable component such as an extra shift. On
the other hand, variable expenses are those
which change with volume. These expenses
include fuel costs, packing costs, warehousing
costs, labour charges, and more. Having a
clear idea about variables and fixed costs will
give you a clear picture of how much money
your company is spending on each area. This
will help you decide the areas where you can
reduce the costs.
